Jill Biden led a Presidential delegation to the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece. They joined approximately 7,000 athletes from more than 170 countries, their families and coaches, along with countless volunteers and spectators. Special Olympics programs serve more than 3.7 million people with intellectual disabilities.

The delegation, which included Kareem Dale, special assistant to the President for Disability Policy; Micki Edelsohn, member of the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities; and, Bart Conner, Olympic gold medal winner and Special Olympics executive board member, participated in a number of events. They attended the lighting of the Flame of Hope, the Opening Ceremonies, and the Special Olympics Aquatic Competition. They also participated in a dedication ceremony for the naming of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Square. The games began on June 25.

While in Greece, Biden met with staff and families at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, and joined Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, on the USS Ramage to visit sailors and offer them thanks for their service to our nation.

In addition to Dale, Edelsohn and Conner, the Presidential delegation included:

  • The Honorable Daniel B. Smith, U.S. ambassador to the Hellenic Republic, Department of State
  • The Honorable Ann Stock, assistant secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Department of State
  • Kenneth Melvin, Special Olympics global manager
