Lighting A Fire Under Smokers

For the first time in a quarter century, cigarette packs and ads are getting a makeover. They’ll soon display bigger and more graphic warning labels to underscore the dangers of smoking, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

And in case smokers are the least bit confused about the message the FDA intends to send, the images will be prominent and explicit. They include such disturbing pictures as a healthy set of lungs side by a cancerous pair; a person smoking through a hole in his throat, and even a stitched-up corpse above the message: Smoking can kill you.

Each ad supplies a number for those who aspire to be former smokers: 1-800-QUIT NOW.
